Verizon Wireless Brings Forward LTE Handset Availability
Verizon Wireless has brought forward the expected launch date for its first LTE based mobile phone by around six months to the middle of next year. The handset could be available three to six months after the operator launches its LTE network, which is expected in Q1 2011.
The operator is expected to launch the LTE service with USB and embedded modems.
Anthony Melone, chief technology officer at Verizon Wireless, said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal that initial handsets would also be dual-mode to ensure backwards compatibility with its existing CDMA network.
"Very likely, we initially won't have a single, integrated chip," Mr. Malone added.
He also suggested that unlimited data download tariffs would be phased out. The text of the interview suggested a concern that internet bandwidth was being used for services such as streaming radio or television services that are already serviced by other broadcast technologies.
