Qualcomm Seeking to Bid in India's BWA Spectrum Auction

Qualcomm is reported to be preparing to bid for BWA radio spectrum in India in a move to push LTE services at a time when 3G networks will only just be starting their own deployment. India plans to auction off the BWA spectrum two weeks after it eventually completes its oft-delayed 3G license auction.

Citing industry sources, the Hindu Business Line newspaper said that Qualcomm has already approached a number of Indian operators exploring the possibility of forming a consortium for the bidding. One of the operators confirmed that a high-level team from Qualcomm's headquarters is already in Mumbai to work out a strategy.

Qualcomm declined to comment on the news report.

Qualcomm's move will also open a new front in the battle between WiMAX and LTE. Though the Government has adopted a technology-neutral stance on using BWA spectrum, it was believed that this will be mostly used for WiMAX technology.

Qualcomm recently agreed to sell radio spectrum it had built up in Australia's 3G license auction, but never put to use.
